Una lettura-performance intensa e contemporanea con Samira Negrouche e Marin Fouqué a Villa Medici di Roma, tra memoria, identità e riconciliazione.
| Un dialogo intenso, necessario e profondamente contemporaneo tra Francia e Algeria avrà luogo a Villa Medici, domani giovedì 9 aprile alle ore 18:30, nel Grand Salon dell’Accademia di Francia a Roma, la poetessa e saggista Samira Negrouche, Premio Internazionale Benjamin Fondane per la Letteratura Francese, e lo scrittore e performer Marin Fouqué, borsista 2025-2026, daranno vita alla lettura-performance Pente raide. Nato da un progetto condiviso e in uscita a settembre 2025 per Actes Sud, Pente raide è un’opera a due voci che attraversa con coraggio e lucidità le tensioni, le memorie e le contraddizioni che legano Francia e Algeria. Una scrittura che si fa confronto diretto, dove si intrecciano pregiudizi e possibilità, speranze e incomprensioni, silenzi e rabbia, in una partitura viva e urgente. La lettura, accompagnata da musica, diventa così uno spazio di incontro e di ascolto, capace di restituire tutta la complessità di un rapporto storico e umano ancora aperto. Al centro, due figure – Samira e Marin – che si fronteggiano su una “pendenza ripida”, metafora di un dialogo difficile ma necessario: tra memoria e presente, tra identità e appartenenza, tra colpa e possibilità di riconciliazione. «Un sole travolgente. Una strada in pendenza nel cuore di una città mediterranea. Due corpi si trovano faccia a faccia…»: è da questa immagine potente che prende avvio un racconto che interroga il passato coloniale, la violenza e il peso delle parole non dette, provando a costruire uno spazio condiviso di narrazione e ascolto. L’evento, ad ingresso gratuito su prenotazione, si inserisce nel programma culturale di Villa Medici e nasce su iniziativa di Marin Fouqué, che ha invitato Samira Negrouche a condividere questa esperienza artistica e letteraria. Samira Negrouche
Nata e vissuta ad Algeri, Samira Negrouche è poetessa, saggista e traduttrice. Formata inizialmente come medico, si dedica oggi interamente alla scrittura. Le creazioni interdisciplinari occupano un ruolo centrale nel suo percorso artistico: negli ultimi tre decenni ha sviluppato un dialogo costante con il palcoscenico, le installazioni e le arti visive.
Considerata una delle voci più autorevoli della poesia algerina contemporanea, le sue opere sono state tradotte in circa trenta lingue. Tra le sue pubblicazioni figurano À l’ombre de Grenade (Éditions Marty, 2003), Le Jazz des oliviers (Éditions du Tell, 2010), Quai 2I1, partition à trois axes (Éditions Mazette, 2017) e Traces (Fidel Anthelme X, 2021).
Nel luglio 2024 è stata nominata Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, onorificenza ricevuta ad Algeri l’estate successiva. Nel 2025 ha pubblicato, insieme a Marin Fouqué, Pente raide (Actes Sud) ed è stata invitata come Franke Visiting Fellow presso il Whitney Humanities Center dell’Università di Yale. Nel novembre dello stesso anno le è stato conferito il Premio Internazionale Benjamin Fondane per la Letteratura Francese.
Marin Fouqué
Marin Fouqué (1991) è scrittore, poeta e performer. Autore di 77 (2019), G.A.V. (2021) e À la terre (2023), pubblicati da Actes Sud e XXIbis, ha ottenuto numerosi riconoscimenti tra cui il Prix Écrivain della Fondation Lagardère e il Prix Alain Spiess. La sua ricerca artistica intreccia scrittura e performance, con un’attenzione particolare ai temi della violenza, della marginalità e delle rappresentazioni della mascolinità contemporanea. Il progetto sviluppato durante la sua residenza a Villa Medici esplora proprio le forme e le trasformazioni della mascolinità nel tempo, dai modelli antichi alle derive contemporanee, indagando i rapporti di potere e immaginando possibili alternative.

Fondata nel 1666 da Luigi XIV, l’Accademia di Francia a Roma – Villa Medici, è un’istituzione francese che dal 1803 ha sede presso Villa Medici, una villa del XVI secolo circondata da un parco di 7 ettari che sorge sul Monte Pincio, nel cuore di Roma. Pente Raide. A Dialogue Between France and Algeria on Stage at Villa Medici
An intense and contemporary reading-performance featuring Samira Negrouche and Marin Fouqué at the Accademia di Francia a Roma – Villa Medici, exploring memory, identity, and reconciliation.
A powerful, necessary, and deeply contemporary dialogue between France and Algeria takes shape at Villa Medici. On Thursday, April 9 at 6:30 pm, in the Grand Salon of the Accademia di Francia a Roma, poet and essayist Samira Negrouche—recipient of the International Benjamin Fondane Prize for French Literature—and writer and performer Marin Fouqué, fellow for 2025–2026, will present the reading-performance Pente raide.
Born from a shared project and set to be published in September 2025 by Actes Sud, Pente raide is a two-voice work that boldly and lucidly navigates the tensions, memories, and contradictions linking France and Algeria. It is a form of writing that becomes direct confrontation, where prejudice and possibility, hope and misunderstanding, silence and anger intertwine in a living, urgent score.
Accompanied by music, the reading becomes a space for encounter and listening, capable of conveying the full complexity of a historical and human relationship that remains unresolved. At its core are two figures—Samira and Marin—facing one another on a “steep slope,” a metaphor for a dialogue that is both difficult and necessary: between memory and the present, identity and belonging, guilt and the possibility of reconciliation.
“A blazing sun. A sloping street in the heart of a Mediterranean city. Two bodies stand face to face…” From this striking image begins a narrative that interrogates the colonial past, violence, and the weight of unspoken words, while attempting to build a shared space for storytelling and listening.
The event, free admission with reservation, is part of Villa Medici’s cultural program and was initiated by Marin Fouqué, who invited Samira Negrouche to share in this artistic and literary experience. The event will be held in French with simultaneous translation into Italian.

Samira Negrouche
Born and raised in Algiers, Samira Negrouche is a poet, essayist, and translator. Initially trained as a medical doctor, she now devotes herself entirely to writing. Interdisciplinary creation plays a central role in her artistic path: over the past three decades, she has developed an ongoing dialogue with the stage, installations, and the visual arts.
Considered one of the most authoritative voices in contemporary Algerian poetry, her work has been translated into around thirty languages. Her publications include À l’ombre de Grenade (Éditions Marty, 2003), Le Jazz des oliviers (Éditions du Tell, 2010), Quai 2I1, partition à trois axes (Éditions Mazette, 2017), and Traces (Fidel Anthelme X, 2021).
In July 2024, she was named Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters, an honor she received in Algiers the following summer. In 2025, she published Pente raide with Marin Fouqué (Actes Sud) and was invited as a Franke Visiting Fellow at the Whitney Humanities Center at Yale University. In November of the same year, she was awarded the International Benjamin Fondane Prize for French Literature.
Marin Fouqué
Marin Fouqué (1991) is a writer, poet, and performer. The author of 77 (2019), G.A.V. (2021), and À la terre (2023), published by Actes Sud and XXIbis, he has received numerous accolades, including the Prix Écrivain from the Fondation Lagardère and the Prix Alain Spiess.
His artistic research intertwines writing and performance, with a particular focus on themes of violence, marginality, and representations of contemporary masculinity. The project he developed during his residency at the Accademia di Francia a Roma – Villa Medici explores precisely the forms and transformations of masculinity over time—from ancient models to contemporary shifts—examining power dynamics and imagining possible alternatives.
French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici
Founded in 1666 by Louis XIV, the Accademia di Francia a Roma – Villa Medici is a French institution that has been based at Villa Medici since 1803. The villa, dating back to the 16th century, is surrounded by a seven-hectare park on the Pincian Hill, in the heart of Rome.
A national public institution under the authority of the French Ministry of Culture, the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici currently fulfills three complementary missions: hosting high-level artists, creators, and researchers in residence for long-term stays—lasting up to one year—or shorter periods; developing a cultural and artistic program that spans all fields of art and creation and is open to a wide audience; and preserving, restoring, studying, and promoting its architectural and landscape heritage, as well as its collections.
